Position Summary

The Assistant Herdsperson plays a key role in the dairy operations to ensure that we meet our milk quality and production goals while maintaining a healthy herd. Animal observation and cleanliness of our barn are critical, as is following all protocols and procedures while contributing to their ongoing improvement. Our milking practices are meticulous to ensure the high quality and safety of our raw milk, and thereby the best possible cheese made at Jasper Hill. This position is key to the day-to-day operation of the farm and requires working as a team with other members of the farm and the cropping crew.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Milking cows

  • Maintaining and cleaning milking equipment and facilities

  • Assisting with young stock care

  • Ensuring that optimal herd health, reproduction, and good animal welfare practices are maintained

  • Ensuring animals are handled in a way consistent with the cleanliness & hygiene needed to make raw milk cheese

  • Assisting with farm projects such as barn, fencing, and equipment maintenance

Knowledge & Skill Requirements:

  • Strong communication skills

  • Able to learn quickly, ask questions, share concerns, seek information/answers, and problem solve

  • Independently motivated and team-oriented

  • Experience working with dairy cows or operating farm equipment is a plus but not a requirement

  • A plus if you live in or near Glover, Vermont

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to lift 60 lbs regularly, be able to bend and kneel, and have a good sense of balance. This is an intensely physical position.

Compensation:

$15 - $20 hourly based on experience. We offer a competitive benefits package, including Health Insurance and PTO for full-time employees.
